Déménagement du Châssis (moving the chassis)

Maintenant que la Sierra est sorite du garage, je peux y mettre le châssis. Il faut avant tout le sortir de la salle de classe où il a été construit. Petit retour en arrière...
Now that the Sierra is out, I can put the chassis in the garage. But first, it has to be taken out of the classroom.

Au moment ou j'ai commencé la construction du Roadster, il y a maintenant presque deux ans, j'avais décidé de le commencer dans la salle de classe de la maison (nous habitons une ancienne école de campagne, voir les premiers posts de ce blog), car la pièce n'étant pas isolée, elle n'était pas inutilisable, et l'espace était parfait pour en faire un atelier.
When I started the construction of the Roadster about two years ago, I took the option to begin the chassis in the classroom of the house (we live in an old country side school house, see the first posts of this blog) because this big room wasn't insulated, so not usable for living in it in this condition, and the space there was perfect for setting-up my workshop.

Seulement le châssis devra pouvoir sortir par la porte (seule sortie possible de la salle de classe), et passer le petit couloir qui donne sur l'extérieur. Ce n'est pas évident car les deux portes ne sont pas alignées, et ce n'est pas large.
But the chassis must be able to get out through the door (the only way out from the classroom), and go through the little corridor leading outside. It is not that obvious, considering that the two doors are not lined-up, and the corridor is quite narrow.

Avant de commencer la construction, j'avais modélisé le châssis en 3D sur Blender. J'avais utilisé ce modèle sur un plan 2D de la porte et du petit couloir dessiné à l'échelle. Selon ces simulations faites à l'époque, ça doit passer Juste, mais ça doit passer. C'est maintenant le moment de vérité !
Before starting the build, I draw the chassis on 3D on Blender. I used this model on a 2D map I drew of the two door's opening and the small corridor. The drawing and the chassis are at the same scale, and according to these theoretical simulation I did at that time, it should go all the way through. It will be just, but it should be OK. Let's see if the theory is verified!

Le plan est donc de sortir le châssis de la salle de classe, de le poser sur la remorque, puis de le transporter sur vers le garage, à l'autre bout du jardin.
So today, the plan is to take the chassis out, to put it on the trailer, and drive it to the garage at the other end of the garden.

L'entrée du garage est prête pour l'opération. Il va falloir passer entre la caisse de la Sierra et le mur de neige sur la droite.
The garage entrance is ready. We will need to pass between the Sierra shell and the snow wall on the right.

Et j'ai aussi dégagé le garage et déplacer le moteur vers l'entrée car c'est là que sera l'avant du châssis.
I also cleaned up the garage and moved the engine close to the entrance as that is where the front of the chassis will seat.

Une fois de plus, je n'aurais rien pu faire tout seul, et Sandra est encore une fois adorable de ma donner un coup de main pour ça pendant son week-end de Pâques. J'ai refait un chariot avec le reste de la palette qui avait cassé sous le poids de la Sierra hier, et là, sous le châssis, ça tient, et c'est pile-poil la bonne largeur.
One more time, I could not have don it alone, and Sandra is so lovely to help me in this mess during her Easter week-end. I rebuilt a trolley with the rest of the pallet which broke yesterday under the weight of the sierra, it should be enough for the chassis, and also, the width is spot-on!

Premier essai...
First try...

Pas très concluant : l'arrière bloque sur la porte de sortie au niveau des équerres de suspensions inférieures. Impossible de passer comme ça.
Not good : the rear part is stuck on the outside door's frame (lower rear suspension brackets). Impossible to go this way.

Retour dans la salle de classe, et on fait faire demi-tour au châssis. Les simulations 3D avaient été faites avec l'avant en premier, certainement pour de bonnes raisons, car là, ça passe !
Back in the classroom, we turn the chassis around. The 3D simulations had been done with the front part ahead, certainly for good reasons, and now everything is OK: it's going through the doors!

Et c'est parti ! C'est en fait la première fois qu'il voit le jour, un grand moment !
Here we go! It is actually the first time the chassis sees the daylight: a big step!

Il faut maintenant le décharger et le rentrer dans le garage.

Et le voilà sur chandelle. Eurêka !
And here it stands on its blocks. Hurrah!

Il est encore tôt en ce lundi de Pâques, et je ne peux pas m'empêcher d'essayer de mettre le moteur dans le châssis, j'attends ce moment depuis tellement longtemps. Est-ce que tout va être OK ? Ceci fera l'objet du prochain post, voir ici.
It is still quite early on this Easter Monday, and I can't help myself trying to put the engine in the chassis, I've been waiting for this moment for such a long time. Is it going to be OK? It will be the topic of the next post, see here.

Sortir la Sierra (taking the Sierra out)

La personne qui doit m'acheter la carrosserie de la Sierra ne pouvait pas venir ce week-end de Pâques. La Sierra est dans le garage, et tant qu'elle y est, je suis bloqué car je ne peux pas y mettre le châssis pour faire les premiers essais de placement du moteur et de la boite. Je décide donc de sortir la Sierra du garage, ça va faire moche dans le jardin, mais ce sera ça de moins à faire quand le gars viendra la chercher, espérons-le, dans pas trop longtemps.
The guy who is supposed to buy the body shell of the Sierra can not come this Easter week-end. The Sierra is in the garage, and as long as it is in it, I'm stuck because I can not move the chassis from the classroom to start the first engine/gearbox fitting trials. So I decide to take the Sierra out of the garage, it is going to be ugly in the garden, but it is one less thing to be done when the guy come to collect it, hopefully very soon.

Je me suis tapé 4 heures de pelletage de la neige avant ça, histoire d'avoir une entrée de garage dégagée. Mais bon ça glisse quand même pas mal.
I treated my self with 4 nice hours of shovelling the snow... Just hate it. Anyway, the entrance of the garage is clear, even though it is still a bit slippery.

J'avais vissé des roulettes sur une palette pour m'en servir comme chariot. Je place cette palette sous la partie avant de la Sierra.
I made a trolley from a pallet on which I fitted small wheels. I put id under the front part of the Sierra.

A l'arrière, j'utilise la chèvre (grue de moteur) pour lever la carrosserie, et je tire le tout vers l'extérieur avec la C5.
At the rear, I use the engine crane to lift the body-shell, and I pull the whole thing backward, toward the garage door.

L'avantage de ce climat nordique (faut bien en trouver un !) c'est que le sol est gelé et dur comme de la pierre, donc au moins, le roulettes de la chèvre ne s'enfoncent pas.
The advantage with this northern weather (you have to find one!), is that the soil is frozen and hard as a rock, so at least, the small wheels of the crane and the trolley will not get stuck in a soft soil.

Très vite, la palette casse, le poids de la voiture est trop important pour elle. Pas grand chose à faire et je n'ai rien d'autre sur quoi faire rouler la voiture.
Very quickly the pallet broke under the weight of the car. Not a lot to do, I haven't anything else I can use to make the car roll.

Le seul moyen est donc de la trainer sur le sol en béton du garage. Sandra qui m'aide lors de cette opération a la bonne idée d'utiliser une planche de bois un peu vermoulue (l'ancien plancher de la remorque) sous la Sierra pour qu'elle glisse plus facilement sur le sol sans trop l'abimer.
The only way is to drag it on the garage's concrete floor. Sandra, who helped me during the whole operation, came with a very good idea: using an old half-mouldy wooden board (the old floor of our trailer) under the car to help it sliding on the floor without damaging it too much.

Petit à petit, j'arrive à tirer la Sierra hors du garage de cette manière...
Step by step, I can pull the Sierra out of the garage...

... et la voilà complètement sortie !

Au passage, j'ai un peu détruit la partie arrière de la Sierra. Avec le câble que j'ai utilisé d’abord, qui a littéralement découpé la tôle sous le poids de l'auto.
By pulling the crane attached to the rear panel of the Sierra, I damaged it a little. First with the cable which literally cut the steel of the rear panel.

Ensuite, avec le crochet de la chèvre que j'ai directement accroché à l'emplacement de la serrure du coffre. Là aussi c'est tordu, et la coffre ne ferme plus. Espérons que le type qui veut acheter la carrosserie n'y verra pas d'inconvénients.
Then with the hook that I attached to the plate holding the trunk lock. The panel is bent, and it is now impossible to close the hatch. Let's hope the guy who wants to buy the body-shell will not have any problem with that...

Enfin, maintenant le garage est libre. Petit nettoyage et préparation du moteur et de la boite. Demain, je sortirai la châssis de la salle de classe pour le mettre dans le garage.
Anyway, now, the garage is free. Tiding-up a little, and I will be able to prepare the engine and gear box. Tomorrow, I'll transfer the chassis from the classroom to the garage.

La Sierra attend patiemment qu'on vienne la chercher. Le plus tôt sera le mieux car ça fait vraiment terrain de ferrailleur. Enfin au moins, je vais la couvrir pour cacher un peu la misère.
The Sierra is now waiting to be collected. The sooner the better, as it really looks like a scrap dealer yard... But I'm going to cover it to hide this ugliness as much as I can.

Supports de boite de vitesse - plaques GM #1 (Gearbox mounts - GM plates #1)

Je suis rentré de Thaïlande. J'y suis resté moins longtemps que prévu, car  je n'ai pas pu y travailler comme je voulais. Mais j'ai pris de bon contacts pour mon site de réservation de voyages plongée (lien à suivre), et j'ai surtout fait deux superbes croisières plongée en Birmanie.
I'm now back from Thailand. It was a shorter stay than planned, as I couldn't work as I wanted. But I made good contacts for my diving trips booking website (link to follow), and I did two beautiful diving trips to Burma.

La Sierra est toujours dans le garage, et il n'y a rien que je puisse faire sur le Roadster tant que le châssis reste dans la salle de classe. Un type veut m'acheter la coque de la Sierra et doit venir la chercher depuis janvier, mais nous avons eu du mal à trouver un moment qui nous convenait à tous les deux avant mon départ pour la Thaïlande. Donc maintenant que je suis de retour, j'espère qu'il va pouvoir venir rapidement.
The Sierra is still in the garage, and there is nothing I can do on the Roadster as long as the chassis remains in the classroom. Someone is supposed to buy the body shell of the Sierra and come to collect it, but it has been hard to find a convenient time for both of us before I leave to Thailand, so I hope that now that I'm back, he can come very soon.

Je peux cependant prendre un peu d'avance et découper les équerres de fixation de la boite de vitesse (GM), et préparer le silentbloc d'origine.
However, I can go a little bit forward and prepare the gear box mount plates (GM).

Il faut meuler les deux rivets de fixation du silentbloc sur la poutre transversale originale de la Sierra. On n'utilise pas cette pourte sur le Roadster, mais on récupère le silentbloc. Pas de difficluté particulère. Enfin le silentbloc n'est pas de la première jeunesse, et il serait peut-être bon que j'en achèrte un neuf. C'est sur la liste, on verra plus tard.
Rivets holding the rubber gearbox mount to the original cross-bar from the sierra need to be ground. The cross bas is not used on the Roadster, but the rubber mount is. The rubber mount is not in the best shape, so I might have to buy a new one. It is on the list, we'll see later.

Je découpe alors les plaques GM dans de la tôle d'acier de 3mm. J'utilise encore une fois des patrons autocollants (voir le post du pédalier (au milieu du post, là où je décris la découpe des plaques d'appuis des pédales) pour plus de détails). Dessins 2D vectoriel sur Inkscape, enregistrement à l'échelle en PDF et impression à l'échelle sur du papier autocollant.
Now I cut the GM plates in 3mm thick steel plate. One more time, I use stencils (see the post about the pedal box (in the middle of the post, where I describe how I cut the foot plates) for more details). 2D vectorial drawings on Inkscape, saved as PDF and scaled printed on stencil paper.

Perçage des trous de montage. Je m'intéroge sur fait que le livre dit de percer au diamètre 11mm, alors que les trous du silentbloc sont de 9mm. Bizarre. Je perce à 9mm pour le moment, il sera toujours temps de les agrandir lors du montage.
Drilling the mounting holes. I'm wondering why the book says to drill 11mm diameter holes, while the rubber mounts holes are 9mm. Strange. For now, I drill 9mm holes, it will not be too late to enlarge these holes when I fit the gearbox if necessary.

Et voilà l'ensemble prêt à être monté sur la boite, puis pointé sur le châssis lors des essais de montage moteur-boite.
Here are the three elements, ready to be mounted on the gearbox and tacked to the chassis when I can do the engine-gearbox fitting trials.
